The American General will also be visiting the NATO base of Incirlik that is still technically under siege as Turkish forces have surrounded it and are controlling who enters and exits the base.

South Sudan's former vice president Riek Machar has described as 'illegal' President Salva Kiir's decision to sack him.

In an exclusive phone interview with Al Jazeera, Machar said: "I'm still the first vice president of the republic of South Sudan. The appointment made yesterday by President Salva Kiir is illegal.

"It has no basis because the peace agreement does not give him the powers to appoint a first vice president under the current circumstances."

Fighting between pro-Kiir soldiers and forces loyal to Machar left hundreds dead. In ensuing days, Machar fled Juba with his men.

*Of the new arrivals registered yesterday in Adjumani, the vast majority were of Madi ethnicity, followed by Dinka, Nuer, Bari, Acholi, Lotuku, Kuku, Peri and other ethnicities. Most new arrivals in Kiryandongo were Moru, Madi and Nuer. New arrivals in Arua were predominantly Kakwa and Pojulu from Yei County.

*1,444 refugees crossed the border using the Elegu border point (Adjumani axis), 193 in Moyo, 39 in Lamwo and 308 in Oraba (Arua district. 335 refugees were received at Kiryandongo Reception Centre in Mid-West Uganda.

New arrivals report that though fighting has stopped in Juba, there is a fear that more fighting may be on the horizon. Refugees from the Eastern Equatoria region claim that armed groups are harassing and murdering civilian populations. In Arua, refugees from Yei Country report widespread lootings and killings. Armed groups in the area reportedly continue to warn civilians to evacuate the area.

According to new arrivals, there remain a number of road blocks and restrictions in place on the roads in South Sudan, and that armed groups that are hindering people’s attempts at fleeing.
