Police has accepted responsibility for torturing Kamwenge town council chairman Geoffrey Byamukama.

The Observer, today ran Byamukama’s storywhere he revealed how was tortured at the hands of police operatives.

His pictures have been circulating on several media platforms revealing fresh wounds and swollen limbs reportedly arising out of episodes of torture while in police custody.

Byamukama was arrested on April 11, from the ministry of Lands office along parliament Avenue in Kampala upon suspicion for a possible role in the brutal murder of AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi, his body guard Kenneth Erau and driver Geoffrey Mambewa.

In a statement released this morning, by the police spokesperson Asan Kasingye, police acknowledges that Byamukama was tortured at the hands of two police officers identified as Fred Tumuhiirwe and Ronnie Byenkya.

"After the arrest, two of our officers and the suspect got involved in a scuffle on the way to Jinja after Byamukama realized he was not being taken to Naguru police headquarters as earlier informed at the point of arrest. The suspect sustained superficial injuries in the process which were aggravated by his medical condition," a statement by police reads.

The two, according to Kasingye, have been placed under investigations by the professional Standards Unit (PSU). Their arrest followed a heated security meeting last evening between the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kale Kayihura and several commanders and directors involved in investigations on the brutal murder.
The meeting was attended by the director Crime Intelligence Nduhura Atwooki and Flying Squad Commandant Herbert Muhangi among others.

Byamukama was yesterday removed from Nakasero hospital and taken back to Nalufenya special operation unit in Jinja district where he is being detained.
He is however yet to be interrogated on his alleged involvement the murder of the three police officers in March.
