#Uganda parliament speaker begs dictator #Museveni to employ election losers

The Speaker of parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, last week made an unusual request: she asked President Museveni to give a job to Proscovia Salaamu Musumba, a prominent opposition politician and former Bugabula South MP.
Musumba, the FDC vice chairman for eastern Uganda, last held a public office in 2016 when she was LC-V chairman of Kamuli. In her speech during celebrations to mark 78 years of Busoga kingdom, Kadaga said Musumba is a good leader and friend of President Museveni who deserves a government position.
The president was chief guest at celebrations to mark 78 years of Kyabazingaship held at Namutumba district headquarters.
“Your Excellency, your former members of parliament from Busoga should be looked at. Some of them were left with no source of income yet they did very good work when they were still in those positions. Key among them is your usual friend Salaamu Musumba. Kindly find some room for her,” Kadaga said amidst cheers from the mammoth crowd.
Both Musumba and Museveni, who were seated in different tents, smiled as Kadaga made the remarks. However, Museveni never responded to Kadaga’s request. He only defended his appointment of the Kyabazinga Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope IV, as an ambassador.

MUSUMBA UPS AND DOWNS
Musumba was Bugabula South MP from 1996 to 2006 before she lost to NRM’s Asuman Kiyingi in the general election. In 2008, she lost to Stephen Mubiru in the Kamuli LC-V by-election. But in another by-election in 2012, she defeated the NRM’s Thomas Kategere for the same position.

MUSUMBA OPEN TO WORKING WITH NRM
One of Kadaga’s aides who declined to be named told The Observer on February 14, that the speaker sees Musumba as a very instrumental leader.
“You know Musumba is one of the people who have given all they can to ensure there is stability in Busoga kingdom. And that alone is enough for maama [Kadaga] to like her. And of course these two ladies have been together for so long,” the aide said.
Until 2008, Musumba was best known as ‘the iron lady of FDC’ who was highly critical of NRM. Interviewed for a comment on February 13, Musumba said: “All I want now is seeing Busoga growing socially, economically and politically. I have directed all my energies and resources to the development of my kingdom.”
In fact, Musumba said she can even serve in the ruling NRM government if the position given to her can be used to develop Busoga.
“If the office given to me is meant for the development of Busoga, I can take it up. But you should also know that I must remain a member of my party, FDC,” she said.
However, Musumba downplayed Kadaga request to Museveni.
“I think she [Kadaga] thought that Abasoga had not seen me at the venue. So, she made the joke for everyone at the function to know that I was present,” she said.
